The Clinical Informatics Specialist is responsible for understanding clinical requirements in a healthcare setting and translating those requirements into formal specifications for clinical technology products and services. The Clinical Informatics Specialist collaborates on identification, analysis, design, testing, implementation and ongoing education and support of electronic medical records and other clinical applications. Responsible for overall policy and operation responsibility for Clinical Informatics to meet GVH Strategic Goals. Uses a nursing perspective, works closely with Information Services to ensure the clinical user requests are considered while defining functional requirements. Works with clinical managers to support needed software updates, training and troubleshooting.

Education: BSN from an accredited school of nursing.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in clinical practice/information technology preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: R.N. licensed in the State of Colorado, or compact license. 

  • Participates in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making, especially as it relates to technology.
  • Maintains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing informatics practice.
  • Demonstrates skill in effectively leading teams while fostering collaboration toward completion of measurable goals.
  • Ensure clinical needs are evaluated and validated when implementation plans are developed by collecting input from end users.
  • Be knowledgeable of the operation of the suite of clinical applications, this includes new ones that are evaluated and installed and existing ones are upgraded.
  • Assess the implications on clinical operations and processes of patient care delivery when assisting in resolution of clinical issues.
  • Recommends and implements clinical best practices required to ensure that use of all EHR systems within clinical services meets Meaningful Use Criteria.
  • Responsible for supporting and training end users on clinical systems functionality and workflows, ensuring optimal use of clinical technology to achieve system wide strategic priorities.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of EMR on a regular basis and coordinates with departments to ensure proper documentation practices to generate proper coding and billing.
  • Participates in development and testing of the application functions.
  • Assists in live conversion plans for new and upgraded systems.
  • Provides clinical support during each phase of implementation.
  • Coordinates and participates in QA of the application functions.
  • Assists in the development of user policies and procedures including active use and downtime procedures.
  • Participates in post implementation change evaluation and develops and implements action workflow and technological processes.
  • Utilize all applications expertly.
  • Performs educator functions related to electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Develops and implements communication and education plan in conjunction with directors and clinical educators to assure changes to the EMR are implemented, plans and supports end users in maintaining change according to standards set.
  • Maintains an on-going user communication and support to assure competency and obtain information on usage of the system and workflow concerns through established regularly scheduled rounds in the facility.
  • Collaborates with end-users, directors, physicians, clinicians to help define health care information system issues and enhancement opportunities and to identify methodologies for implementing, utilizing and modifying informatics solutions and data structures that support health care access, delivery and evaluation.
  • Maintains an ongoing user support structure by recruiting super users and maintaining a trained and engaged core user group.
  • Plans and conducts regular meetings with super users to identify issues as well as educate to improve knowledge transfers in the clinical setting.
  • May conduct regular focus meetings that provide opportunities for end users to verbalize concerns and suggest potential improvements related to the use of the information systems.
  • Provides integration consultation and recommendations to the IS Department for EHR systems deployment on the clinical units and with the medical staff.
  • Collaborates with users, leadership, nursing and IT department to resolve conflicts between workflow and the information systems.
  • Supports staff in the use of existing technology in a manner which promotes maintenance of patient safety and confidentiality and supports facility specific and system wide processes and principles.
  • Maintains an up to date knowledge of trends and advances in the field of healthcare informatics as well as new developments in hardware and software technology.
  • Monitors EMR updates for new functionality and/or changes impacting workflow and communicates information to directors.
  • Maintains an up to date knowledge of EMR related changes affecting GVH and communicates information to directors. Utilizes this knowledge in supporting users and process teams.
  • Provides recommendations for cross-departmental EHR system deployment and integration within clinical services.
  • Recommends and implements clinical best practices required to ensure the use of EHR systems within clinical services meets Promoting Interoperability/MIPS Criteria.
  • Proactively resolves EHR documentation issues or concerns affecting patient care.
  • Participates in facility and system interdisciplinary process improvement teams to identify potential future users of the information systems and potential improvements in the current use of the systems.
  • Investigates EMR related issues and effectively works toward a solution.
  • Acts as a liaison between EMR vendor and GVH by participating in vendor related activities impacting GVH.
  • Establishes communication and positive relationships with hospital departments and with the medical staff.
  • Establishes and maintains an audit process to improve quality and completion of electronic clinical documentation.
  • Participates as a member of the Nursing Leadership group as a liaison between IS and Nursing.
  • Personally adheres to behaviors that are consistent with mission and values of GVH.
  • Embraces change and lifelong learning, taking personal accountability to seek out experiences that reflect current practice in order to maintain skills and competence in clinical practice and role performance.
  • Seeks feedback concerning one’s own practice.

Compensation: 32.67/hour - 41.38/hour DOE

Benefits Eligibility

Medical, dental, vision, health care FSA, and dependent care FSA: All active employees working 40 or more hours per pay period are eligible for benefits on the first of the month following date of hire.  PRN staff are not initially eligible for benefits, and GVH follows all Affordable Health Care Act Eligibility guidelines.
