The Medical Technologist/Technician performs various clinical laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases by following procedures and operating equipment as directed. The MT/MLT also performs and records test results, quality control and performs preventative maintenance on instruments. As needed, the MT/MLT will help prepare tissue for the pathologist. Education: MT: Completion of Medical Technology Program approved by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). or Three years of academic studies at an accredited college and completion of 12 consecutive months of internship in an accredited school of Medical Technology, leading to a Bachelor’s Degree. MLT: Completion of accredited Medical Technician Program approved by the CLSI. Experience: The MT must have completed internship in an accredited school of Medical Technology. The MLT must have completed internship in an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technician. The MT/MLT must have comprehensive knowledge of laboratory procedures, techniques and instrumentation and the ability to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment while performing routine and emergency procedures. Licenses/Certification: ASCP board certified or equivalent, or qualified through examination by the Health, Education and Welfare accreditation program. Maintenance of current CPR or BLS.
