POSITION PURPOSE (Summary)
The Lead Nurse, RN is responsible and accountable for directing and facilitating the flow of patient care activities of the hospital ED, OB and MS departments on an assigned shift. In addition, Lead Nurse RNs provide professional nursing skills in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the nursing care for assigned patients
Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Experience: Minimum three (3) years of acute care nursing experience, including experience in an Emergency Department, ICU, or other critical care area
Licenses/Certifications: R.N. licensed in the State of Colorado, or compact license. Med/Surg: Current BLS certification, ACLS and PALS (or ENPC) within the first year and maintenance expected* thereafter. ED: current BLS certification. TNCC certification required. NRP certification required. ACLS, PALS (or ENPC) certification maintenance expected. OB: Current BLS, ACLS and NRP certification upon hire and maintenance expected. 6 months after hire AWHONN Beginning Fetal Monitoring is required. Within 1 year of hire AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring is required.
*Expected = if clinicians expire they must be signed up for the next available class after their expiration and per director discretion.
- Coordinates and directs appropriate tasks to appropriate personnel within the unit, consistent with legal and professional guidelines and hospital standards. Assign and/or delegate tasks based upon the needs of the patient and the knowledge of the selected care provider.
- Exercises overall responsibility for shift assignments and emergency situations and ensures appropriate coverage for shift vacancies. Maintains composure in high intensity situations.
- Comply with safety practices that protect patients and healthcare providers. This includes procedures to reduce the spread of infection, maintain crowd control, and prevent violence in the care setting. Keep department Directors apprised of any significant events.
- Collaborates with physicians and other medical staff to identify the medical management, patient goals, and nursing intervention required.
- Serves as resource to hospital staff, and may provide training and orientation to new staff.
- Initiate accurate and ongoing assessment of physical, psychological and social problems of patients. Obtain subjective and objective data through history taking, physical examination, review of records and communication with patient, significant others, and caretakers, as appropriate. Use assessment techniques and criteria that are pertinent to the patient’s age-specific physical, psychological, and social needs. Identify nursing diagnoses/ patient care needs throughout the triage process.
- Implement plan of care for the patient based on assessment data, nursing diagnoses/potential complications, provider orders. Safely and properly administer medications, treatments, procedures, and dressings in the patient care areas.
- Collaborates with all members of the health care team to plan, implement, and evaluate patient’s status and treatment plan. Uses approved SBAR format for all caregiver to caregiver patient handoffs.
- Perform admission, discharge and transfer procedures, and assist others with patient's activities and care.
- Supervises RNs, UCs, CNAs, ED techs
- Demonstrate leadership skills as evidenced by team management, effective communication and delegation.
- Maintains calm demeanor and demonstrates effective communication skills. Has ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining respectful communication.
- Actively contributes to financial stewardship by managing time, resources, and supplies during assigned shift.
- Investigates customer complaints and takes appropriate action and provides detailed documentation. Utilizes decision-making skills in identifying potential problems requiring the Director of Patient Care Services collaboration
- Participates in and accepts responsibility for functions delegated by the Director of Patient Care Services
- Oversees completion of unit specific administrative tasks (e.g. quality controls completed, Pyxis discrepancies resolved, crash cart checks, temp logs updated, etc.).
- Reviews charts as needed for periodic or special audits.
- Participates in drills and emergency response training
- May be called in for GVH disaster response.
- Projects a professional manner and image and complies with departmental dress code. Wears identification badge while on duty 100% of the time according to hospital policy.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Compensation: $29.65 - 37.56/hr, depending on experience.
