Work Hours: 8am-5pm




The Insurance Counselor checks patients' insurance eligibility and obtains insurance pre-authorizations for services.  This position takes incoming insurance-related patient telephone calls and works with patients and insurance companies to resolve obstacles preventing account resolution and obtain payment.  Other duties include providing estimates to patients for services and communicating them in advance of services.  This position requires the use of multiple software applications, attention to detail, and exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills. The Insurance Counselor will communicate in a compassionate and professional manner with patients and other hospital staff.




Education: Experience or training in healthcare office setting and customer relations.  Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.


Experience: Requires ability to work cooperatively with other employees, other departments and the public. Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines is required.  Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and concentrate in a busy environment is required.  Ability to use common computer system and business software is necessary. Healthcare billing experience preferred.




·         Observes professional ethics in maintaining confidential information concerning the personal, financial, medical, or employment status of a patient of  GVH and their families.


·         Maintains accurate account information at all times.

·         Checks patient's insurance eligibility using the Emdeon Assistant software and communicates benefits to patients via telephone or by mail.

·         Contacts insurance companies to obtain preauthorization for hospital, home health, and hospice services.

·         Collaborates with Case Management, other hospital departments, and Home Medical Services to ensure services are preauthorized prior to rendering them.

·         Obtains estimates for services upon patient request and via department schedules using the Emdeon Assistant software and communicates them to patients via telephone or by mail.

·         Accepts incoming patient telephone calls related to insurance questions and accurately and promptly responds to their inquiries.

·         Ability to explain insurance benefits, deductibles, co-insurance, and discounts to patients.

·         Educates patients on the financial policies of the hospital and directs them to appropriate resources as necessary.

·         Verifies contractual discounts on accounts are accurate per the hospital's contracts.

Compensation: $17.50 - $20.13/hr, depending on experience.

Benefits Eligibility

Medical, dental, vision, health care FSA, and dependent care FSA: All active employees working 40 or more hours per pay period are eligible for benefits on the first of the month following date of hire.  PRN staff are not initially eligible for benefits, and GVH follows all Affordable Health Care Act Eligibility guidelines.
